Saline Nasal Rinse ---------- Formula: Rinse cup with filtered/distilled water to remove any soap build up. Boil 2 cups filtered/distilled water to sterilize. WATCH OUT for "exploding water" phenomonom so you don't get burns. Let water cool (10-15 minutes). This allows out gassing of noxious chemicals in the water. Heat up water again so it is hot when poured into nasal sprayer. Use a 1/8 teaspoon measure as a scoop. 3 scoops PURE salt (usually called "pickling" salt) 2 scoops pure baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) couple shakes of potassium chloride (commonly called "no-salt") couple shakes of calcium chlorides (not known where to get this). Stir until dissolved. Potassium chloride and calcium chloride together help emulate the electrolytes in the blood stream and are supposed to be more gentle on the sinuses. Sodium bicarbonate acts as a preservative and will also change the sinuses from acidic to basic which bacteria have a hard time with. Pour into clean nasal sprayer and allow to cool. Using this hot or even warm will burn sinuses and cause great pain. DO NOT add any type of fragrances, herbs, or oils into the solution. If any of these get into the lungs, this could cause instant pneumonia. ---------- Cleaning the nasal sprayer: Use distilled vinegar and soak it for awhile. Hot vinegar may be even better. Vinegar is very acidic and will kill bacteria and dissolve any build up from the salts. Be sure to spray some through the tip to make sure the spraying channel is cleaned. If the sprayer is nasty, get out the scrub brush and hot soapy water and have at it. Rinse it all out with filtered water. For the final rinse, use some of the extra saline solution. Be sure to spray a little through the tip to make sure vinegar isn't left in the channel. Dump and fill the bottle with the fresh saline solution. ---------- Usage: Tilt head to the left and insert sprayer nozzle into left nostril. Hold tissue against and under nostril to catch dripping. Squeeze sprayer bottle to inject saline solution into sinus. You should feel the saline solution going "deep" into your head. This may take some practice to get the right injection. Try to fill the sinus with a large shot of saline solution. Once this is done, remove the sprayer bottle and pack the tissue into the nostril. Shake head back and forth to slosh saline solution around in the sinus. Tilt head back to normal leaving tissue packing in place. If at any time you can taste the saline solution, the top of the head needs to be angled down more so the saline solution doesn't run into throat. This may take some practice to get the right injection. Repeat steps but with the right side this time. Remove tissue packing (preferrably over toilet for dripping). Bend over and tuck head as far in as possible. The key here is to repeat the previous steps but for the upper sinus above the eyes. Ideally the head should be upside down. Put a tissue against the tip of nose to catch dripping. Insert and spray saline solution into each nostril. Remove sprayer nozzle and pack tissue into both nostrils. Shake head back and forth to slosh saline solution around in the sinuses. Tilt head back to normal leaving tissue packing in place. Try to leave tissue packing in place for a few minutes so the saline solution has a little time to act. Remove tissue packing (preferrably over toilet for dripping). Blow nose out with kleenex to drain remaining saline solution. All this can be safely done twice a day (usually morning and night) on an everyday regular basis. For more severe problems (allergies and sickness), do not go above 4 times per day without doctor's approval.
